Beijing Olympic Games open in passion as quake-affected China hosts world with pride

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Carrying Pierre de Coubertin's dream of "solidarity, peace and friendship" to the world's most populous country, the 29th summer Olympic Games opened in the Chinese capital Beijing on Friday, 112 years after the Games' modern revival.

At 23:37 Beijing time, at the invitation of International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge, Chinese President Hu Jintao declared open the Games, before an ecstatic audience of 91,000 in the full-packed National Stadium, or the Bird's Nest, and several billion TV viewers worldwide.

Passion culminated in the stands around zero hour Saturday, when 45-year-old ex-gymnast and triple gold medalist at the 1984 Los Angeles Games Li Ning set ablaze the cauldron atop the stadium in a stunt-like fashion, "running" around the 500-meter-long rim of the steel-framed Bird's Nest with computer-controlled wires tied to his waist.

"Today, the Olympic flame lit in Olympia has come to the end of its odyssey and will be kindled to adorn the night sky of Beijing," said Liu Qi, head of the Games' organizing committee, who called it a "dazzling historic moment."

The global relay of the Beijing Olympic flame, covering a record distance of some 137,000 kilometers (85,000 miles) in 129 days, was marred by sporadic protests of pro-"Tibet independence" activists overseas and had to be halted for three days at home as the whole nation mourned the loss of nearly 70,000 lives to the May 12 Wenchuan earthquake.

While there was no doubt the night should be celebrated as a joyful and exciting gathering of the world, the devastating 8.0-magnitude earthquake whose aftershocks is still being felt was simply an unavoidable topic.

"You have chosen as the theme of these Games 'One World, One Dream." That is what we are tonight," said International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge. "As one world, we grieved with you over the tragic earthquake in Sichuan Province."

Shortly before his speech, the entry of the 1,099-member Chinese delegation, co-led by 7-foot-6 basketball star Yao Ming and an unknown kid from the quake zone, stirred up the deeply-buried emotions of the Chinese audience.

The entire stadium gave a standing ovation when the 9-year-old Lin Hao, a second-grader from a primary school in the epicenter Wenchuan who risked his life to save several schoolmates from the collapsed building, walked briskly on the lap and waved a national flag and an Olympic flag at the same time with both hands.

"China is great!" "Go China!" "Go the Olympics!" shouted the Chinese crowd, while some foreign reporters, still puzzled with the kid's identity, asked their Chinese colleagues: "Is this Yao's son?"

As the cauldron burst into flames, a shower of fireworks lit up the skyline of Beijing, with the Olympic rings shining over the Tian'anmen Square, and rainbows arcing above both the Bird's Nest and the Great Wall.

No matter where they were - skyscrapers in Shanghai or survivors' tents in quake-ravaged Sichuan, the 1.3 billion Chinese were staying up late this mid-summer night, to witness history.

For the first time in the Olympic history, a record 204 countries and regions -- almost the entire Olympic Family except for Brunei, which dropped out for failing to comply with the IOC registration requirements -- sent their athletes to Beijing.

With bands from five continents playing welcome tunes in turns, the nearly two-hour parade of the athletes started with Greece, the country that nurtured the Olympic Games over 2,800 years ago, as usual and ended with the host.

The march-in sequence was quite different from those of the previous Games, as the order of entry was decided by the number of strokes of the first character of a delegation's Chinese name. Under the new rule, Guinea, whose name begins with a two-stroke character, walked second while Zambia, with 16 strokes, became the 203rd.

More than 80 foreign leaders and international dignitaries, including U.S. President George W. Bush, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and IOC Honorary President Juan Antonio Samaranch, were seated in the VIP stand along with top Chinese leaders. They rose from time to time to salute athletes from their countries.

The home crowd welcomed the Chinese, Chinese Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei delegations with roaring cheers and thunderous applause.

Among all participating countries and regions, China has sent in the most athletes, and its star-studded 639 lineup formed a sharp contrast to the country's embarrassing Olympic debut at Los Angeles in 1932, where only one Chinese sprinter took part.

The Chinese Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei delegations have 72 and 133 members, respectively.

The United States and Russia, which are widely expected to join the host as the biggest winners in Beijing, sent in more than 600 athletes and nearly 500 athletes respectively. The "Big Three" in all grabbed 258 out of the total 929 medals, with 94 golds, at the previous games in Athens.

The Iraqi delegation, a group of 10 including the flag bearer, strode into the stadium and stole the limelight from many larger delegations. The cheering audience waved hands or flags to salute the athletes from that war-torn country, who almost missed the Games for a row over "political interference" between Baghdad and the IOC.

With all delegations ushered in, Chinese table tennis player Zhang Yining and gymnastics referee Huang Liping, holding a corner of the Olympic flag, took the oath on behalf of all athletes and referees, vowing to keep the Games competition fair and clean.

Beijing, which pledged to deliver a "clean" Games, has enforced the tightest ever doping control measures, which will test nearly half of the competing athletes.

The four-hour opening ceremony on Friday was kicked start at 20:00 sharp, with a countdown ritual and a firework presentation that many would only describe as original and thrilling.

Awaken from darkness by a beam of light from a sundial atop the Bird's Nest, a formation of 2,008 young men in grey robes switched on and off 2,008 LED-embedded Fou, a 3,000-year-old percussion instrument similar to today's drum, to flash out -- in both Chinese and Arabic numerals -- the last seconds of the seven-year countdown to the Beijing Games, which started on July 13, 2001.

Twenty-nine colossal footprints, created in the sky by fireworks explosions and symbolizing the pace of the successive summer Games, traveled all the way along the central axis of Beijing, from the ancient city gate of Yongdingmen in the south to the futuristic Bird's Nest in the north. Sparkles fell into the center of the stadium and "lit up" the floor -- to bring out the shining Olympic "Dream Rings" on a huge LED screen and proclaim the arrival of the Olympiad.

"For a long time, China had dreamed of opening its doors and inviting the world's athletes to Beijing for the Olympic Games. Tonight that dream comes true. Congratulations, Beijing," said the IOC chief.

The earliest written record of this dream was an article published on a 1908 issue of the Tianjin Youth magazine, which first raised the question -- When will China be able to host the Olympic Games? When Beijing, after one failed bid in Monte Carlo 1993, turned out to be the winner in Moscow 2001, more than a million local residents took to the streets for a sleepless night of wild celebrations.

"This is a job 100 times more demanding than directing a blockbuster movie, because I'm responsible for celebrating the realization of a century-old dream and showcasing a 5,000-year civilization," filmmaker Zhang Yimou, who became the chief artistic director for the opening ceremony in 2006, once said.

At least he has made a good try. The four ancient inventions of papermaking, movable-type printing, compass and gunpowder, the Silk Road, the seafaring adventure of Zheng He - which was 87 years earlier than Christopher Columbus, and the latest space exploration that plans to launch three astronauts for space walk later this year .. in the 50-minute art performance that involved over 16,000 performers, Zhang seized every second to demonstrate China's glorious past and promising future, and recount its earlier attempts to integrate with the world.

"I love it. It combines the Chinese ancient history with the modern high technology," Paduld Sri Rohana de Pettagan, an official from the Sri Lankan Olympic Committee, said of the one-hour show, which involved more than 16,000 actors.

With the "globe" turning amid 2,008 smiling images of kids all over the world, Chinese singer Liu Huan and British soprano Sarah Brightman, hand in hand atop the gigantic ball, jointly unveiled the Games' theme song -- You and Me.

"For dreams we travel, thousands of miles, we meet in Beijing; You and me, from one world, forever we are one family," they sang.

Interpreting the idea of "One World, One Dream" a week ahead of the Games, the Chinese president told the international media:"The Chinese people want to join hands with people of all other countries to write a new chapter for the international Olympic Movement, and create a better future for mankind."

For those Sichuan residents who still live in tents or temporary plank houses, their future is also being kindled by the Olympic flame kept in the Bird's Nest some 1,600 kilometers away.

"It is a great thing that our country is hosting the Olympic Games, which shows China is growing more and more strong," said 76-year-old Hu Yunfang, a resident of Qingchuan County in Sichuan.

Hu and his family, who still lived in a tent for fears of the aftershocks, finished dinner early for the live broadcast of the Games' opening.

"We will fear no disaster if our country is strong, and we can sure rebuild our homeland from scratch," said Hu.

Big Yahoo Layoffs Coming Soon?

By Rafat Ali We have been following a tip since the start of January, that Yahoo is preparing ground for a big round of layoffs, and have been digging since on clues and leads. Now SAI get an anonymous tip (ours wasn't) which says the same thing, with a number to it: that the company has created a list of 1,500-2,500 jobs that may be eliminated in the next two weeks, and CEO Jerry Yang will decide whether to go ahead or not. The company has a total of about 12,000 employees.

Yahoo (YHOO) is announcing its Q407 earnings on Jan 29th, so one school of thought is the company will do the call, see what the hit is to its stock and then decide on the cuts, one way or the other.

Yesterday Techcrunch reported on a small bunch of layoffs including from the Yahoo's Brand Universe project (which Vince Broady was heading, and after that project got killed, left last week) and Yahoo Answers team. Broady's group got its severance packages yesterday, we have heard.

My guess is that the a big part of the layoffs, if they happen, may come from some European units, as the company has hinted recently. Toby Coppel, the head Yahoo's European business, gave an ominous warning in an FT story in November: Yahoo staff was given until Q1 2008 to revamp the poorly performing parts of its European business, or these would be closed down or sold. Also, the FT story said Yahoo could think about outsourcing some European search operations to third parties, which would affect the company headcount as well.

In a related BreakingViews/WJ opinion article yesterday, the authors make a case for completely outsourcing Yahoo's search operations worldwide, to Microsoft (MSFT), or even Google (GOOG), for a big fee...this isn't the first time it has been proposed...many analysts have said the same thing. Then, there are Yahoo's stakes in Yahoo Japan and Alibaba, which the column says could be spun-off into a different unit and spun off.

This may be the radical rethink Yang had promised in the first 100 days of his taking over as CEO, only delayed by another 100 days or so.

Indiana Health Care Subsidy Program For Low-Income Residents Approved

The federal government approved an Indiana state-subsidized program that will allow health insurance to be extended to about 130,000 uninsured state residents, the AP/Indianapolis Star reports. The program will be partially funded by an increase in the state cigarette tax, which is expected to generate $140 million annually, as well as federal matching funds. Over the next five years, the federal government is expected to contribute more than $1 billion to the program. Gov. Genital HSV-1 outbreaks recur less regularly than genital HSV-2 outbreaks.
Most people when first infected with HSV-2 are not aware of their infection. However, if signs and symptoms occur during the first outbreak, they can be quite pronounced. The first outbreak usually occurs within two weeks after the virus is transmitted, and the sores typically heal within two to four weeks. Other signs and symptoms during the primary episode may include a second crop of sores, and flu-like symptoms, including fever and swollen glands.
Most people diagnosed with a first episode of genital herpes can expect to have several (typically four or five) outbreaks within a year. Those symptomatic recurrences can and most often do include blisters that ulcerize.

Ceci expliquerait probablement les performances exceptionnelles de la championne olympique du 400 mètres nage libre, Laure Manaudou qui participera en août 2008 aux Jeux Olympiques de Pékin (Beijing) en Chine.

NBC to Launch Clash of the Choirs

It may not have longevity as a full-blown series, but NBC's latest non-scripted project could boost its holiday ratings. Titled Clash of the Choirs, the music contest show will air over four nights, from Dec. 17-20.

Five celebrity singers will return to their hometowns to find the talent needed for an amateur singing group. Once assembled, those groups will compete in-studio, singing current hits and holiday classics. The winning choir gets to choose a prize to benefit its hometown.

Produced by BBC World Productions (Dancing with The Stars), the series is based on a Scandinavian format, and runs six hours, with two-hour broadcasts airing from 9-11 p.m. on Dec. 17 and Dec. 19. One-hour programs screen on Dec. 18 from 9 to 10 p.m., and Dec. 20, from 8 to 9 p.m.

evolutivo prima verso il Pds, poi verso i Ds ed ora verso il Partito
democratico, continua ostinatamente ad accumulare contraddizioni interne.
Portandosi dietro, sempre, anche chi aveva avversato ogni progetto di
rinnovamento, magari premiandoli spesso con incarichi di dirigenza del nuovo

corso.

La scelta di Nicola Rossi, che denuncia il deficit riformista del partito,
mette a nudo la vera anomalia dei Ds. Quella di aver compiuto un percorso
articolato verso un assetto riformista, con l?utopia di poterlo portare a
termine, facendo leva anche sulla sua componente più radicale o
massimalista.
Illudendosi, in pratica, di riuscire a non pagare l?inevitabile posta della
scissione, se si eccettua quella pur dolorosa del gruppo che diede vita a
Rifondazione Comunista. Risultato: un lento, progressivo ed implacabile
sfaldamento del consenso, ripetutamente nascosto da contingenti strategie
elettorali.

Si arriva, così, al sorprendente paradosso che, impegnati ad evitare o
arginare eventuali fughe a sinistra, si cominciano a perdere pezzi
importanti sul fronte più nevralgico del riformismo. Lo fotografa l?allarme

Hi my name is Shelby, my friend came over a while ago and she said "OH shelby did you hear about that girl in Ladera Ranch? She got in a car accident?" and I said "No, why?" she said "Well someone sent Kait the pictures when I was over hrt house and I saw them. She pretty much lost her face and I freaked out when I saw the pictures" so we spent about 5 hours on the internet searching for details about Nikki and her car crash, and searching for the images... We never found any pictures. So my friend called her friend Kait up and asked if she could send the pictures, guess what? She did.

Nikki Catsouras was honestly like a VERY very VERY pretty girl. There was the before pictures of the accident. Then, there was the after pictures. I was sick to my stomach when I saw those terrible pictures. And there still on my e-mail address. Everytime I log in and I see the subject "DRIVE SAFETLY" I get grossed out. But you know what? I really think this is a lession for kids AND parents that do drunk driving. Its so wrong. So I was gonna put the pictures up here just so people would think twice about drinking and driving. But I'm not. The Catsouras family has already been through enough.

THE NIKKI CATSOURAS STORY... or stories....

my goodness there are so many different stories going around. I'll share them all with you! #1. Nikki Catsouras got in a car accident on October 31st(Halloween) at 1 pm. Her father owned a black porche, Nikki had never driven it so she took her fathers car keys and drove off. She was on the toll road in Ladera Ranch near Alton, she was racing with someone and she lost control of the car and drove into a toll booth.

#2. October 31st Nicole(Nikki) Catsouras 18, got in a car accident. "Nikki said she wasn't feeling well, she went to the doctors" Nikki and her father Christos got in a fight the night before the crash about "Tipical Teenager things" "I then took her car keys away because of the fight. I remeber before I went to work, I told her I loved her and she blew me a kiss and flashed a peace sign. Everyday before I go to work I kiss my kids goodbye. But not this day." so when Nikki went in the house she grabbed her dads keys to the porche. "I remeber hearing the garage door open and then the car leave" Said Lesli Catsouras. Nikki then got drunk and drove off. Thats when she got in the accident.

#3. As of October 31st Nicole Catsouras is dead. She got in a serious car crash on the toll road. Nikki got in a terrible fight with her dad the night before the crash, they fought about "Teenager things" Nikki's father never really talked to her and that hurt her. So she woke up got ready grabbed her dads car keys. Most are saying they think she killed herself.

Those are some of the stories I've heard. I don't know which one to believe. But all I can say is if you get these photographs sent to you DON'T OPEN THE ONES OF NIKKI!!! You may vomit, faint or just get sick to your stomach and keep looking at the picture, allthough its gross, I bet if you get the pictures and open the one of Nikki(DON'T DO IT) but if you do I bet you'll keep looking at it, thats what I did. It made me sick but I still looked at it. And Catsouras family, I know how you feel. I'm so so so SO sorry this happend. And your daughter should love being homeschooled!!!!! If I was you, I would let them go on the computer, just when you check your e-mail make sure there are no attachments. When I got the e-mail of the pictures, the subject was "DRIVE SAFETLY" so if you get a e-mail of that don't open it. NO WEBSITES THAT I'VE FOUND HAVE HAD THE PICTURES ON IT! Everybody i've talked to has either gotten a text messege with the pictures or an e-mail!!!!!!

Sin embargo, de acuerdo con el diario mexicano El Universal, los reportes oficiales podrían indicar que el crimen fue ocasionado por una venganza pasional causada por un amor lésbico.

Según informes, la líder de la banda Zaida y los Culpables murió a sus 28 años de edad, el pasado sábado, en el hospital Alfredo Pumarejo de la ciudad fronteriza de Matamoros, Tamaulipas, México, donde recibió dos disparos mortales en la cabeza. La cantante mexicana se encontraba internada en dicho centro luego de que recibiera un disparo en la espalda en el motel Mónaco, en una balacera en la que falleció su acompañante femenina, Ana Bertha González, además de un empleado de dicho establecimiento, Leonardo Sánchez.

El subjefe del Sheriff del condado Cameron, TX, Álvaro Guerra, informó que las autoridades estadounidenses de dicho paraje colaborarán con las investigaciones de este crimen. Guerra precisó que la justicia mexicana busca a un hombre que se presume conocía a las víctimas y que recientemente había adquirido un vehículo en Brownsville, TX. 'Teddy bear' teacher charged with insulting Islam

The British school teacher arrested in Sudan has been charged today with blasphemy, insulting Islam and inciting hatred after her pupils named a teddy bear Muhammad.

Gillian Gibbons, 54, now faces 40 lashes, a six month prison sentence or a fine if convicted of the crime.

The decision to press charges has triggered diplomatic tensions between Sudan and Britain. David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, immediately summoned the Sudanese diplomat in London to the Foreign Office.

"We are surprised and disappointed by this development, and the Foreign Secretary will summon as a matter of urgency the Sudanese ambassador to discuss the matter further," a spokesman for Gordon Brown said.

Abdel Daim Zamrawi, Sudan’s deputy justice minister, told reporters: "The investigation has been completed and the Briton Gillian was charged under Article 125 of the penal code."

"The punishment for this is jail, a fine and lashes. It is up to the judge to determine the sentence," he said.

Ms Gibbons has spent three days in custody being questioned by police in Khartoum before a file about the case against her was presented to prosecutors.

The decision to prosecute follows mounting pressure and a series of protests in Sudan by Muslims, who claimed the former deputy head from Liverpool had committed blasphemy by allowing the children in her class at Khartoum’s Unity High School where she worked to name to toy after the prophet.

She is due to appear before a judge tomorrow for a formal hearing.

There has been some speculation that the mother-of-two, who had only been in Sudan since leaving England in July, could also be charged with sedition, a far more serious charge than insulting Muslims.

In Khartoum, leaflets had been distributed calling for protests after Friday prayers as students at the city’s university held protests waving Sudanese newspapers which featured pictures of the teacher on the front page.

Muhammad Toum, a law student, said: "She is a teacher and should be teaching her pupils to be respectful and have morals but instead she is doing the opposite."

Whether you realize it or not, social networking is something you do every day. Each time you tell a friend about a good movie, bore a neighbor with pictures from your kid's birthday party or catch up on gossip at work, you are reaching out to people you know to share ideas, experiences and information. The genius of social-networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook lies in their ability to capture the essence of these informal exchanges and distill them online into an expanding matrix of searchable, linked Web pages.

Nearly half the people who went online in the U.S. in October--83 million, according to the research firm comScore Media Metrix--visited MySpace or Facebook, making social networking one of the most popular activities on the Web. MySpace has the clear lead, with a U.S. audience of 72 million--more than twice that of Facebook's--and 2007 profits estimated at $200 million.

Although Facebook is expected to earn just $30 million, the three-year-old site is getting all the buzz. One reason: Microsoft recently bought a mere 1.6% of the company for $240 million, an investment that values Facebook at $15 billion, which is in the ballpark of Gap and Xerox. That's far smaller than Google, valued at about $200 billion, but both Facebook and MySpace think they are made of the same game-changing stuff. Like Google, they want to change the way you live and work online. And like Google and practically everyone else on the Internet, they are betting that advertising will make them, and their investors, unimaginably wealthy along the way.

Founded by Harvard dropout Mark Zuckerberg, now 23, Facebook was originally a way for college students to keep tabs on who was dating whom. It's evolved since then into a social network: an open book on its members' lives, welcoming just about anyone.

Facebook's inclusiveness has broadened its popular appeal, but the alchemy of the Web is converting eyeballs to dollars via the "click-throughs" that advertisers crave--and the social nets are still searching for the magic formula. Members of both Facebook and its chief rival, MySpace, spend on average about 3 1/2 hours a month clicking around on each site, but they get so caught up in checking out their friends' pages and updating their own that they are less likely to click through to the ads. What's more, Facebook may not be able to keep up the momentum of its rapid-fire growth because social-networking aficionados are notoriously fickle. Remember Friendster?

Social networks are a lot like nightclubs, and Friendster was the place to be in 2004 and '05, before MySpace came along and stole its mojo. In short, Friendster got boring. "It's like a high school dance," says Max Levchin, CEO of Slide, a top maker of image-based applications for social networks. "Everyone shows up and nobody does anything, because there's nothing to do."

So Facebook and MySpace are trying to morph from the high school gym--a place for flirting and gossip--into one-stop entertainment destinations. "MySpace is your starting point to the Internet," says CEO Chris DeWolfe, who recently rolled out features that let MySpace members play casual games like online poker and watch mini-videos of '80s TV shows like Fantasy Island and Diff'rent Strokes. Facebook has gone even further. In August it sent out an open invitation to software developers to devise new widgets. Three months later, Facebook has some 7,000 free add-on applications that let members do everything from monitor their stock portfolios to map anyplace they've ever visited to text friends' phones via the site.

Every one of those applications represents one more aspect of your life that can live on Facebook, and the more you can do there, the more important and valuable the site becomes. (And, as MySpace recently discovered, the more tempting it is to hackers.) Search engines help you find things, but everything they cull from is public. A social network affords something more: access to the personal lives and tastes of the people in your circle, or at least as much as they're willing to share. For that reason, explains Chamath Palihapitiya, Facebook's vice president of product marketing, "I see Facebook as becoming more essential than search."

Will advertisers see it that way too? In early November, both Facebook and MySpace announced new schemes that would allow advertisers to more closely target messages. The idea is that if ads are made more relevant, more people will click on them, which in turn will boost the fees the sites can charge for them. MySpace's new "hypertargeting" strategy scans profile pages for keywords and sells ads against them. If you say you love burritos, for example, a banner ad for Taco Bell might appear at the top of your page. Facebook, on the other hand, involves its members more intimately in the process. The site gives members the option of sending an update to their friends with every purchase they make online--an extension of the news feed that tracks all the other things Facebook members do. If you choose to tell your friends about the Seinfeld DVD box set you just bought from Amazon, for example, your friends will also get a small ad right beneath that update. Advertisers can specify, on the basis of demographic data culled from a user's profile, exactly which members they want to view the ad.

It has the creepy prospect of turning your life into one big direct-mail campaign. But Facebook's Zuckerberg sees the new model as just another form of word-of-mouth. "Nothing influences people more than a recommendation from a friend," he says. To allay privacy concerns, Facebook makes sharing your shopping habits optional, but it's betting that for the bare-it-all generation growing up on social networks, broadcasting what you buy will seem as natural as posting the details of a bitter breakup--or what you ate for breakfast.

While Facebook has the momentum, its battle with MySpace is just heating up. "I don't think there is going to be one winner or loser," says Michael Morris, a media analyst with UBS. "Both MySpace and Facebook can flourish, just like there's more than one television network." Other big players are casting their lots with one or the other. Microsoft beat Google and Yahoo! in the bidding for Facebook. News Corp. bought MySpace for $580 million in 2005, and Google hosts MySpace's ads, guaranteeing at least $900 million in revenue through 2009.

There is no guarantee, however, that people will embrace the advertising models that Facebook and MySpace are pushing. "How do you serve up ads in such a fashion that your young, hip audiences aren't turned off by it?" asks venture capitalist Jim Timmins of Pagemill Partners. Google faced these same worries in 2004 when it launched context-sensitive ads inside its e-mail program Gmail. When the company went public later that year, skeptics voiced similar concerns about the viability of an ad-supported model for its search engine. Google now trades at more than $600 a share and could earn $4 billion this year.

Which brings us back to the real question: Is Facebook worth $15 billion? If it goes public sometime next year, as is widely expected, potential investors need to ask, "How big can Facebook grow?" says Internet analyst Bob Peck of Bear Stearns, who pegged Facebook's value at $6 billion in August. "You want to buy low expectations," says David Trainer, president of the business-valuation firm New Constructs. Google went public amid widespread skepticism, but Facebook has been anointed by its boosters as the next Google, despite MySpace's bigger audience and deeper pockets. As is always the case with the Web, some investors are going to make epic amounts of money. Others won't.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Underdog Ron Paul is airing the first TV ads of his presidential campaign, hoping to capitalize on a fundraising surge and promote his blend of anti-war, anti-spending libertarianism in New Hampshire.

The two 30-second spots are part of a $1.1 million series of five ads that the Republican congressman intends to air in the state in November and December.

One ad, called "Catching On," features New Hampshire residents voicing their support, including a self-described undeclared voter who says he will vote in the Republican primary simply to cast a ballot for Paul.

The ad says nothing about Paul's stands on the issues and simply attempts to capture the interest he has been generating, particularly on the Internet.

The second commercial, "Troops and Deficits," spells out two central tenets of Paul's campaign — getting U.S. troops out of Iraq and balancing the budget.

"I'm the only one in either party who's pledged to bring our troops home from Iraq immediately and cut government spending," Paul says, speaking directly to the camera against a backdrop of the preamble of the Constitution. "In Congress I've never voted for an unbalanced budget, and as president I'll veto any one that passes. Deficit spending threatens the dollar and our future prosperity. Once we stop wasting trillions overseas we can cut the budget and still help people who need it."

Paul gained attention this month when his campaign reported raising a surprising $5.2 million from July through September. He reported having $5.4 million in the bank, an amount that he has quickly put to use to build up his public identity.

He is the only Republican presidential candidate who has called for a quick exit from Iraq.

Pada 20 Ogos Nurin dikatakan hilang setelah keluar bersendirian untuk ke pasar malam berhampiran rumahnya di Wangsa Maju. Dalam kejadian yang lain, Isnin lalu, mayat budak perempuan tidak berbaju yang disahkan mangsa deraan seks ditemui dalam sebuah beg sukan di Jalan PJS1, Petaling Jaya Utama. Kasihan sungguh apabila mendengar kemaluan dan dubur mangsa perbuatan orang seks maniac ini disumbat dengan terung dan timun.

Setelah Ujian asid deoksiribonukleik DNA dijalankan, didapati mayat tersebut mempunyai DNA yang sama dengan ibu bapa Nurin Jazlin Jazimin. Khabarnya, dapati 99.99 peratus sampel darah budak hilang sepadan ibu bapa. Namun, ianya dinafikan oleh bapa Nurin Jazlin Jazimin atas sebab fizikal mayat tidak sama dengan anaknya. Begitu juga dengan polis yang masih belum mengesahkannya dan pemeriksaan DNA kedua akan dibuat.

Nasihat saya kepada ibu bapa di luar sana, jagalah anak-anak anda baik-baik. Jangan dibiarkan anak anda keluar bersendirian. Terapkan nilai-nilai masyarakat yang positif dalam jiwa mereka. Ibu bapa kini perlu juga membuat penilaian semula, amalan negatif mana yang patut dibuang kerana tidak lagi sesuai dan boleh mengundang bahaya.

Melihat kepada gambar Nurin Jazlin Jazimin dan gambar mayat gadis yang didera itu, kemungkinan besar mayat tersebut adalah Nurin Jazlin Jazimin. Kini, kita hanya menunggu pemeriksaan DNA yang kedua dijalankan.

Dengan linangan air mata, Jazimin Abdul Jalil, pagi ini menuntut mayat anaknya Nurin Jazlin, 8, dari Hospital Kuala Lumpur untuk dikebumikan selepas solat Jumaat.

Jazimin, 33, yang sebelum ini menafikan mayat itu adalah anaknya yang hilang diculik sejak 20 Ogos lalu walaupun ujian asid deoksiribonukleik (DNA) membuktikan sebaliknya, dilihat sebak dan berterusan mengalir air mata sepanjang proses menuntut mayat Nurin Jazlin, mangsa bunuh dan penderaan seksual.

Jazimin, yang berbaju Melayu merah jambu dan berseluar hitam dengan ditemani keluarga dan sanak saudaranya, dibenarkan membawa keluar mayat anak gadisnya itu pada jam 11.15 pagi ini, dan selepas bacaan doa lalu beredar keluar dengan sebuah van, sambil disaksikan sayu oleh orang ramai dan kakitangan hospital.

Di Seksyen Satu, Wangsa Maju di kediaman keluarga itu, ibu kanak-kanak itu, Norazian Bistaman, 35, menunggu suaminya untuk membawa pulang buat kali terakhir Nurin Jazlin yang lebih mesra dengan panggilan ‘Kak Ngah’ dalam kalangan keluarga dan jirannya.

Jenazah Nurin Jazlin telah dikebumikan di tanah perkuburan Islam Wangsa Maju selepas solat Jumaat hari ini.

Police believe Nurul Jazlin Jazimin’s murderer is hiding in the Klang

I just wanted to express my deepest disappointment towards ZEE USA’s production team. I know that the October 6th episode went well over the time allotment and thus required editing. Unfortunately for one particular contestant, Amanat Ali, this meant that his best performance ever- a performance that carved a new place in the show- and a celebratory episode that spoke directly to the success of the show- was clearly cut out!

North Americans were merely given a glimpse of Amanat’s segment. I am a devoted and ever loyal fan of the show- and I can not ever remember an episode like this. Viewers did not have a chance to see the mike being snatched from Amanat mid song. We had no idea that the audience demanded an encore- not once but 3 more times! We did not get to see the emotions of everyone on the set and audience. We did not get to hear the praise that he was given by not only all the guests but the highly esteemed guru’s themselves. All season viewers have watched plots that all affect your TRP but this episode truly glorified the greatness of the show and exemplified the true impact that this show has made in the lives of not only your viewers, but the singers, the guests and the guru’s themselves. If this was any other episode- this could be forgiven- but when this is the last performance leading up to the Finals- this is completely unacceptable and in fact- clearly demonstrates ZEE’s bias towards Amanat, one that has a direct negative influence on voting!

As a viewer I feel cheated and even more so, I feel that Zee has cheated Amanat.

Furthermore, North American viewers have not been provided a fair venue to cast our votes. I am in Canada and the SMS code only works in the Continental US. Obviously, this is a common way to make money as fans pay to vote via SMS but viewers had the right to know that we could also vote online via saregamapa.rediff.com. Although it has been eluded that North Americans can also vote online- you will clearly see from the website that this is not the case.

I willl be posting and circulating this letter on various blogs and message boards. I may be one writer but I represent the voice of tens of thousands of your fans.

Desperate Housewives racial slur: Philippines wants apology

MANILA (AFP) — The Philippine government is to seek an apology from the producers of the hit US television series "Desperate Housewives" for a racial slur against Filipino medics, the Philippine Daily Inquirer said on its web site Wednesday.

The officials cited a recent episode where actress Teri Hatcher, who plays Susan Mayer, asked whether the person attending to her during a medical consultation "can I check those diplomas because I want to make sure that they're not from some med school in the Philippines."

Asked if the government would seek an apology from the producers of the show, and ABC television network that carries it, executive secretary Eduardo Ermita said: "Yes, I think we should, on behalf of our Filipino professionals."

"On the face, we can look at it as a racial slur. We are looked down upon too much, considering the number of our medical professionals in the US," the Inquirer quoted Ermita as saying.

Ermita likewise appealed to civil society groups and other Filipino organisations in the US to "call the attention" of the show producers, and Hatcher, to the "racial slur."

Filipino consul in Los Angeles Mary Jo Bernardo Aragon wrote a letter of complaint to the ABC network saying that Filipino medical workers were in demand all over the world.

"The US recognises the students of Philippine medical and nursing schools and in general, does not require additional schooling in the US for Filipino healthcare professionals," she added.

Aragon also said many Americans go to the Philippines for medical services that they cannot afford at home, the foreign department said in a statement.

Turns out Steven Furtick is a preacher who got pissed people kept trash talking him in the blogosphere. The guy lives in North Carolina. He’s mad and he’s not gonna take it anymore. Top Scientist: Stir Up Oceans, Stop Global Warming

Add a new one to the list of somewhat zany suggestions to counteract global warming — only this time the idea comes from the "Gaia guy."

James Lovelock, environmentalist, futurologist and creator of the Gaia hypothesis and its view of Earth as a huge organism, proposes that we help the planet "cure itself" by artificially ramping up ocean mixing, which would stimulate the growth of carbon-munching algae, thereby sinking more carbon dioxide into the ocean.

The Gaia hypothesis looks at Earth as a whole instead of at each of its systems separately — viewing it as something of a superorganism.

"I regard the Earth as a responsive, self-regulating system," Lovelock said, one which should be able to cure itself from any climactic calamities, as it has done in the past.

But human activities have knocked the system out of whack, as increasing amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere raise Earth's average temperature, which in turn contributes to increased melting at the poles, sea level rise and other potentially disastrous consequences.

While some think that we still have time to stem the tide of rising carbon dioxide levels, Lovelock is less optimistic.

"I think we are almost certainly past any point of no return, and that global warming is irreversible, almost regardless of what we do in the conventional things, like following the Kyoto Protocol," he said.

Switching to cleaner energy sources and implementing strategies to mitigate global warming, such as carbon sequestration, would take too long to get into gear and would require an impossible level of global cooperation, he said.

Instead, he thinks that we need to give the Earth a way to help cure itself.

Possible cure?

If we did nothing at all to counteract the effects of global warming, the Earth would eventually cure itself of global warming, pollution and other ills without any help from us, but that would take many hundreds of thousands of years.

"In the past there have been many hot spells when the Earth heated up as much as we think it will as a consequence of global warming — the last one was 55 million years ago. And it recovered spontaneously, but it took a long time to do it," Lovelock told LiveScience.

Recent estimates by a scientist at Texas Tech University say that the United States alone must by 2050 cut its emissions by at least 80 percent below 2000 levels to avoid a large increase in global temperatures by the end of the current century.

"So what we were trying to do here is to stimulate it to enter the recovery phase quickly," Lovelock said.

Lovelock's proposal, detailed in the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Nature, is to use free-floating or tethered pipes to increase the mixing of the ocean by moving nutrient-rich deep waters up to replace the more barren waters of the surface.

These nutrients would stimulate the growth of algae and create large blooms that would take up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they photosynthesize.

"And when they die, their bodies sink to the bottom of the ocean as calcium carbonate shells, and that gets rid of [the carbon] for good," Lovelock explained.

Wild ideas

Lovelock's unusual idea joins a growing list of proposals to combat global warming that include:

— Constructing a "sun shade" by creating an artificial ring of small particles or spacecraft that would block some of the sun's rays from hitting the Earth, thereby reducing heating

— Shooting sulfur into the air to reflect incoming solar radiation back to space (volcanoes do this naturally when they erupt)

— Making airplane flights longer by requiring planes to fly at lower altitudes, which could reduce the formation of heat-trapping contrails

— Injecting carbon dioxide into wet, porous rocks deep underground to store it there for thousands of years, a process known as carbon sequestration

— Or dumping iron into the ocean, also to stimulate the growth of algae, in the hopes the blooms will act as a major carbon sink.

While some scientists doubt the feasibility of many of these proposals, Lovelock says that they would probably work, but ultimately wouldn't solve the problem because they are cases of humans curing the Earth, instead of allowing it to cure itself.

"It's not going to do a lot more than buy you time," he said, all the while allowing people to continue emitting carbon dioxide.

And though his proposal has similar results to the so-called iron fertilization experiments, Lovelock sees two key differences: "[Piping up nutrients] would be continuous. With iron fertilization, you have to keep on going out and spreading the iron," he said. "And also, this would bring all the nutrients up, not just the iron."

Will it work?

Lovelock also sees other benefits to his proposal. Because the ocean's deep water is cooler than the surface waters, the pipes could also be beneficial in regions that are at high risk for severe hurricane strikes, such as the Gulf of Mexico, Lovelock added, since hurricanes feed on warm surface waters.

Ken Caldeira, an ocean ecologist at Stanford University, says he has more confidence in the likelihood that this aspect of Lovelock's proposal could work than in its efficacy as a carbon sink.

"That will produce some cooling, at least for awhile, until you heat up that whole surface layer," he told LiveScience.

Another benefit of the proposal, as Lovelock sees it, is that it does not require a large, globally-coordinated effort, like many other proposals would.

"If it works, it's not that huge a project," Lovelock said. "Something on the order of 10 to 100,000 of these pipes would do quite a lot."

Lovelock envisions that the pipes would be about 100 to 200 meters long and about 10 meters in diameter, with a flap at the bottom that will use the motion of the waves to pump water up. (Other groups, including the private company Atmocean and Stephen Salter of the University of Edinburgh have proposed similar structures that use slightly different engineering approaches.)

Lovelock doesn't think that the proposal should be jumped on immediately, but that experiments should be done to test the scientific, economic and engineering viability of the proposal.

"I wouldn't attempt to cure the Earth tomorrow, so to speak," he said.

Instead, he advocates a small-scale project to test out the pipes on a small island in the tropics that has coral reef in danger of bleaching.

If the reef gets better over time after the pipes are put in, the project can proceed to a larger reef, such as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, then perhaps move to the Gulf of Mexico, all the while ironing out the kinks at each stage.

Weighing pros and cons

Lovelock acknowledges that the pipes could have negative effects, such as ocean acidification — the more carbon dioxide that is added to the ocean, the more acidic it becomes, possibly endangering marine life.

Caldeira points out another possible kink in the proposal: As phytoplankton die and sink down into the ocean, the nutrients and carbon they contain tend to go back into solution in the ocean.

"And so more or less, the carbon that you're bringing up in your pipes will balance the carbon that's sinking down," he said. "I think it's unlikely to be very effective as a carbon storage approach."

Even if it does work, it is unlikely to be effective as a widespread approach, so bringing down carbon emissions is still the key to solving the global warming problem, Caldeira said.

Lovelock says these effects need to be investigated in experiments, but adds that what might be bad for one particular area or organism could be good for the planet as a whole.

He likens it to the treatments for serious human diseases that can often make a person sick, but are necessary to beat a more serious ailment (using chemotherapy to treat cancer, for example).

"If we have a treatment for something fairly serious, there'll almost certainly be side effects, and you have to balance the consequences of the benefits and the loss," he said.

Caldeira says that despite the potential problems and questions of efficacy, proposals like this should definitely be investigated, "because there's basically little risk, if you threw one of these out in the ocean."

Essentially, he says, we need to consider any ideas that might help, and weed out the bad from the good.

Oscar De La Hoya was six years old when he first began to box. "My brother, Joel Jr., put a pair on me and the other pair on one of my cousins," Oscar recalled. " Then he yelled 'Time!' immediately, I covered my cheeks with the gloves." "The next thing I knew � wham � the first punch is a left jab that goes between my gloves and lands smack on my nose!" Oscar De La Hoya ran home, crying every step of the way.

De La Hoya never pictured himself becoming a fighter. He was always found in the park playing baseball with the other kids. It was actually his older brother Joel Jr. who many believed had the potential to become a great fighter.

Joel Jr. never pictured his younger brother as a fighter. "Oscar hated physical confrontations, he never had a street fight. He preferred to play with skateboards near the house and baseball in the park. Nothing violent." But boxing is in the De La Hoya tradition and blood. It goes back several generations when his grandfather, Vicente, a 126-pound amateur in the 1940s, and his father Joel, Sr., who fought as a lightweight in the professional ranks in the mid-1960s.

Oscar was being pushed to go to the gym and learn to defend himself. He started going to the Eastside Boxing Gym in East L.A and began training and remembers that "every time I won a fight, my cousins, aunts and uncles would give me money. A dollar here, a quarter there, half a buck."

It was there that this future world champion began his road to stardom.

He quickly discovered the ingredient that would make him a devastating fighter, his powerful left hand. He began to train religiously.

Oscar's first true test was at the 1992 Olympics. He waited anxiously and prepared his entire life for that moment. He promised his ailing mother, Cecilia, that he would bring back home the gold medal. There was no question in his mind that he would win it. He was going to win it for his mother!

The road to the gold medal bout was not an easy one. As the Olympic tournament began he disposed of his first three opponents - knocking out the first. Then in his first medal round match, what should have been an easy victory became a close controversial decision. De La Hoya struggled against his opponent抯 awkward bull-rushing style, but Oscar would not be denied as he emerged with a tight one-point victory.

De La Hoya was now in the gold medal bout. The very gold medal he promised his beloved mother and was eager to win since all the other U.S. boxers failed to bring home the gold.

His final hurdle would come against Marco Rudolph, the fighter who had defeated Oscar one year earlier at the World Championships in Australia. It was De La Hoya抯 first loss as an amateur in four years. For Oscar, it would make the victory that much sweeter.

De La Hoya, fighting at 132 pounds, dominated the fight from beginning to end. He controlled Rudolph for the entire three rounds. In the third round, he used his powerful left hand to knock down Rudolph. It was no contest and the referee stopped the fight. De La Hoya celebrated by dancing around the ring with a U.S. flag in one hand and a Mexican flag in the other.

Oscar had accomplished his ultimate goal, he fulfilled his special promise to his mother -- one of the most emotional moments of the Olympic Games.

During his amateur boxing career, De La Hoya's record was an outstanding 223-5 with 163 knockouts.

After the Olympics, Oscar bought a big house in a nice neighborhood a few miles from East L.A. He wanted to share the success of winning the gold medal and the house with his mother, but she was already gone. His mother, Cecilia died of breast cancer.

Oscar wanted to quit boxing because the pain of losing his mother was unbearable, but he realized that she wanted him to be a great fighter. So he continued and became a five-time world champion with explosive power and great boxing skills in the ring.

Oscar has won world crowns at 130, 135, 140, 147 and 154 pounds beating some impressive boxers along the way. He stopped Wilfredo Rivera in eight rounds on the "Title Wave" championship card in Atlantic City, NJ and defeated a tough Hector Camacho in 1996 by unanimous decision. "He's a true champion," said Camacho. "He's the best I've ever fought and I've been in there with the best."

De La Hoya's also fought against the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez in Chavez's 100th professional fight. Oscar defeated him soundly and cut Chavez's eye and broke his nose, but felt honored to be in the ring with such a true warrior and boxing legend.

De La Hoya captured the welterweight title in his victory over six-time world champion Pernell Whitaker on April 12, 1997, in Las Vegas. It was a huge challenge for the Golden Boy who went up seven pounds (from 140 to 147) and took on a seasoned tricky southpaw who at times fought in a low crouch and fired from different angles.

He ruled the welterweight division until he met with up with the hard-hitting Felix Trinidad on September 18, 1999. It was one of the most anticipated fights in the 90's and broke pay-per-view box office records. The outcome for the very first time wasn't in Oscar's favor. He lost a 12-round unanimous decision and the WBC Welterweight title went to Felix Trinidad.

After a successful fight against Derrell Coley, De La Hoya went after the tough Sugar Shane Mosely and lost by unanimous decision in a 12 round WBC title match.

The loss to Mosely and Trinidad made him re-think his desire to continue boxing. De La Hoya decided to take some time away boxing and pursue a childhood fantasy -- singing.

De La Hoya has been singing since the age of seven when he and his beloved mother, Cecilia use to sing Spanish songs together every day. "Since I was a little boy I have always wanted to record an album. I used to listen to my mother sing around the house, every hour of the day, listening to her singing ballads. We would then sing together around the house with her everyday."

De La Hoya release his first album on EMI/Latin Records named "Oscar" and was successful. The album topped Billboard's Latin Dance charts for several weeks and "Ven a Mi," a single from the album was nominated for a Grammy.

But boxing was still in Oscar's blood and after a 10 months layoff, De La Hoya returned to the ring with a new trainer - Floyd Mayweather Sr.

After defeating Arturo Gatti in his first fight back, De La Hoya had his mind set on becoming champion again. His target -- WBC super welterweight champion, Javier Castillejo of Spain.

De La Hoya pounded Castillejo for 12 rounds to win an easy unanimous decision over the Spaniard in rout to his fifth world boxing title in as many weight classes. A feat that has only been accomplished by boxing legends Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns.

Besides having a great boxing career and an impressive brief singing career (was nominated for a Grammy), De La Hoya tied the knot in 2000 with sultry Latin pop singer Millie Corretjer of Puerto Rico in a secret ceremony in San Juan.

On June 5, 2004, Oscar De La Hoya went after his sixth world title in another weight class -- the Middleweight Division. His opponent was Felix Sturm, an undefeated boxer from Germany who was unknown in the United States.

Sturm was the aggressor all night, nailing De La Hoya with left jabs. In the final rounds, De La Hoya managed to out-box his opponent to win the WBO middleweight title by unanimous decision.

The table were now set for a showdown with the undisputed middleweight champion (160 pounds), Bernard Hopkins.

De La Hoya, who has stated to fight only the best fighters in boxing, lived up to his words when he fought Bernard Hopkins on September 17, 2004. De La Hoya fought valiantly for 8 rounds against Hopkins, but fell to the ground and couldn't recover from a devastating left hook to the rib cage in the ninth round.

"He caught me with a perfect punch." said a disappointed De La Hoya. "I tried to get up, but I couldn't. I had the wind taken out of me."

De La Hoya has plans to continue fighting, but at the lower weight class of 154 or 147 pounds.

Despite a few losses in his boxing career, Oscar De La Hoya continues to be on top of the welterweight division and is still regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. Oscar's pleasant personality and good looks has made him one of the most recognized and likable athletes in the world today.

Porn Star Jack Venice Sought in Washington State University Sorority Rape

Jack Venice, star of more than 80 adult films, has pled not guilty to raping a student of Washington State University while she was asleep at a sorority house.

Along with the charge of rape Venice, whose real name is Christopher Jack Reid, is facing charges of first-degree burglary, attempted residential burglary and two counts of residential burglary.

According to police reports Venice and a Washington State University student, Kyle Schott, broke in to several sorority houses before sexually assaulting a woman who was sleeping at the Kappa Alpha Theta house.

Schott told police that he entered the Kappa Alpha Theta house with Venice and the two entered the room in which she was sleeping. At that point Venice began touching the woman and she awoke causing the two men to flee.

Chris A. Bugbee, lawyer for Jack Venice, said, “We are confident that when this matter is concluded, he will be absolved of all of the allegations against him.”

With Steve Jobs' recent announcement of his intention to fight off the independent iPhone developers, the question that must be asked is how will Apple try to defeat the hackers: Frequent and disruptive software updates, or lawsuits? The wait is over. After being teased over the past few weeks with rumors that Apple would turn a blind eye to iPhone hacking or *gasp* even encourage it, the news is in and it ain't good for the hackers.

At the official U.K. launch of the iPhone Tuesday, CEO Steve Jobs made it clear that Apple will fight attempts to use the popular device on unauthorized networks. "It's a cat-and-mouse game," said Jobs. "We try to stay ahead. People will try to break in, and it's our job to stop them breaking in."

For the loose-knit community of iPhone developers, the last few months have been an around-the-clock hacking session. As a result, programmers have released a plethora of applications. Apple has sunk a significant amount of developer time and marketing dollars into creating a product so drool-worthy that fans spent days queuing outside stores around the nation. Because of the significant hype surrounding the device, and the millions of customers who would flock to whichever wireless carrier with whom Apple signed an exclusive distribution deal, Jobs and his negotiation team were able to extract highly favorable, if not downright obscene amounts of money from the wireless carriers. While AT&T agreed to give Apple up to $11 per month for new customers who came to the carrier due to an iPhone purchase, some media reports are suggesting that Jobs was able to extract 40 percent of the monthly subscription fees that U.K. network O2 is charging its customers.

O2 is charging customers between $70 and $110 for its different monthly iPhone plans. With an 18-month contract, Apple is looking at between $500 to $800 in revenue share per customer. While the approximately $250 that AT&T will give Apple for a new customer over the lifetime of a 2-year contract is rather paltry in comparison, it still provides enough of a financial incentive for Apple to do all that it possibly can to lock the devices down, and keep hackers from unlocking the platform. Furthermore, if keeping open-source tinkerers away from the guts of the iPhone can also protect Apple's new, but potentially hugely profitable venture into the mobile phone ringtone market (99 cents per ringtone for each song already purchased), even better for Mr. Jobs and his stockholders.

Now that Jobs has declared war on the iPhone hackers, the only question that remains is the approach that Apple will take: software updates that'll break the iPhone hacks, or lawsuits against the trouble-making developers. To answer this question, we to look to the law and, most importantly, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

The most powerful weapon in Apple's legal arsenal is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). This law, much hated by open-source developers and much loved by copyright holders and mega corporations, was passed by a unanimous vote in the U.S. Senate before being signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1998.

The DMCA is fairly complicated, but there are two main parts that seriously threaten researchers, hackers and hobbyists. First, the law makes it a crime to circumvent the technological locks that control access to copyrighted works. Second, the law makes it a crime for anyone to "traffic" or share such circumvention tools. That is, it's a crime to break the encryption protecting a copyrighted work, and it's an additional crime to share the software that breaks the encryption with anyone else.

While the law was originally intended to protect music and movie owners who were scared of infringement in the Digital Age, it has been used to try to block the sale of third-party printer cartridges, universal garage door openers, and even Web sites that publish leaked copies of scanned fliers for post-Thanksgiving "black Friday" sales. A few years ago, a number of prepaid mobile phone companies started using the DMCA to go after people who were buying their subsidized phones, stripping off the software and re-selling them to others.

When it passed the DMCA, Congress empowered the Librarian of Congress to issue exemptions to the anti-circumvention provision of the law. This power is intended to protect the public from access-control technologies that substantially interfere with their right to make non-infringing uses of copyrighted works. Current exemptions include the right for users to hack restrictive e-book digital rights management technology to allow for inter-operation with screen-readers and other helpful technologies used by blind and disabled people.

In 2006, Stanford professor (and now EFF cyber-lawyer) Jennifer Granick petitioned the Librarian of Congress to permit mobile phone customers to hack their own phones. Citing a need to reduce environmental waste due to prematurely disposed locked phones, and the needs of business travelers to be able to communicate around the world without carrying a phone for each country, the Copyright Office agreed with Granick, and granted mobile phone customers an exemption to the anti-circumvention rule.

That should be the end of it, right? An exception to the anti-circumvention rule exists for mobile-phone inter-network interoperability, and thus Apple should have no DMCA-related leg to stand on. The problem lies in the fact that the DMCA has two nasty provisions: the anti-circumvention rule and the anti-trafficking rule. As crazy as it may sound, while it's perfectly legal for a blind programmer to reverse engineer Adobe's e-book technology, it's illegal for her to share it with another, perhaps less technically savvy blind friend. As far as the law is currently concerned, if you don't have the technical skills to reverse engineer, you're not permitted to free your e-books or your mobile phone.

Unless this legal snafu is some kind of incentive-via-necessity based plan to turn every blind American into a reverse-engineering uber-hacker, the law is clearly broken. It is most likely an unfortunate oversight on the part of the 100 senators who unanimously voted for the DMCA, perhaps without fully understanding how it would be used in the future. Thus, we now find ourselves in a situation where it is perfectly legal to hack your own iPhone, but most probably illegal to share software with others that will automate the process.

With the DMCA most likely on Apple's side, Steve Jobs and his band of merry lawyers should have already filed a number of lawsuits against the iPhone Dev Team for its anySIM unlocking tool. Given the noticeable absence of lawsuits, one has to ask: Why hasn't Apple sued?

Apple likes the DMCA, a lot. Were there some sort of DMCA frequent-flier mile scheme, Steve Jobs would have earned himself at least a few free flights to Tahiti. While Apple is on solid legal ground when it goes after programmers for reverse engineering the Mac OS to run on cheap Dell PCs, any sort of DMCA action against the iPhone Dev Team would be far more problematic. Despite the fact that the Librarian of Congress does not have the power to create exemptions to the anti-trafficking provision of the DMCA, Congress clearly did not intend to create this artificial barrier between those with programming skills and those without. Quite simply, the law is broken. If Apple begins filing DMCA iPhone lawsuits, it could soon find itself in the unpleasant position where the courts--or worse, Congress--end up re-evaluating the merit and legality of the DMCA.

My suspicion is that Apple will not want to risk losing the golden egg-laying DMCA goose, and thus, will stick to frequent software updates for the iPhone that break community written applications. Why sue when you can patch?

In the mean time, you can get your own time table from the e-Solat web, which tells you the prayer’s times, and berbuka puasa time (Maghrib) as well as sahur periods (Imsak & Subuh). This is quite a versatile application since there is a feature for you to get the timetable for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and up to 1 year.

To get the timetable for your area/locality, click the state of your choice once you are in the e-solat main page. Then choose your area (lokasi), and pick your period preferences (daily, weekly, monthly or yearly).

As the time (prayer time) in Kuching is slightly earlier than Peninsular, I will berbuka puasa earlier than most of you guys. For example, on the first day of Ramadhan, the Maghrib time is 6.40pm compared to KL time of 7.15pm. but those friends in the UK like Affzan and Adam will enjoy faster buka puasa time (short day, long night), say around 4.30pm?

Owen Wilson Suicide Attempt Confirmed

Owen Wilson is said to be recovering at a Beverly Hills hospital.

(CBS/AP) According to the entertainment news show "Extra," actor Owen Wilson tried to commit suicide Sunday.

"Extra" obtained the Calls for Service report from the Santa Monica Police Department, which shows the reason for the 911 call from Wilson's house to be a suicide attempt.

He was hospitalized in good condition Monday, a day after he was taken from his home by ambulance, a hospital spokeswoman said.

"I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time," Wilson said in a statement released through publicist Ina Treciokas.

No further comments were expected, she said.

The actor was at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was transferred there from St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica.

It was not known why he was hospitalized, but Santa Monica Fire Battalion Chief Jose Torres said Monday that the department responded to a call that involved the 38-year-old actor.

The chief would not comment on Wilson's injuries or condition, citing federal privacy laws.

A neighbor said a police car, fire truck and ambulance were outside the actor's gated house Sunday around noon, The Associated Press reported.

"These guys were kind of taking their time taking a stretcher out of the ambulance, then they went into the house," said neighbor Geoffry White, 61, who lives directly across the street from the actor.

According to "Entertainment Tonight," Wilson was later brought to the Beverly Hills' Cedars-Sinai Hospital where he detoxed. The show also reported that brother Luke Wilson was spotted leaving Cedars-Sinai on Sunday night with their brother, Andrew. People magazine said Owen's parents also visited.

Wilson, who recently broke up with actress Kate Hudson, was nominated for an Oscar for "The Royal Tenebaums" screenplay. He has starred in many box-office blockbusters such as "Wedding Crashers," "Zoolander" and the thriller "Behind Enemy Lines" with Gene Hackman.

Most recently, he starred in "Night at the Museum" with Ben Stiller.

It was unknown if Wilson's hospitalization would affect his appearance opposite Jennifer Aniston in the 20th Century Fox comedy "Marley & Me."

A Fox spokesman told the Hollywood trade paper Daily Variety that "it's a totally inappropriate question at this time" whether he would appear in the movie.

Wilson's hospitalization could also keep him from helping to promote "The Darjeeling Limited," in which he stars alongside Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman. The Fox Searchlight film was to be released next month.

Paramount also had a Wilson film due out in March: the Judd Apatow-produced "Drillbit Taylor."

Can the Apple iPhone Survive Abuse?

How strong is your iPhone? Abuse is a common problem for cell phone users. They’re either prone to shock or permanent damage when dropped. Else, they can have scratches all over.

How about the iPhone? iPhone abuse has received its fair share or analysis and review.

Resistant to Scratch

There appears to be a consensus among critics that the iPhone is scratch-resistant even if its shiny surface is prone to smudges. According to Steven Levy, a reviewer, these finger smudges, though it turns the entire touch screen mucky, it can be easily cleaned with the use of babywipes or damp cloth. As for its wear and tear, the iPhone is still capable of looking good and new even if they’re jammed all together with pens, keyrings, and coins in your pocket.

Walt Mossberg, an Apple aficionado and a critic, believes that its being scratch resistant is due to its strong lass. Even if it can pick up finger prints, it can’t acquire any scratch, no matter if it has a holster or a protective case.

The Sensitive Back?

Generally, the surface of an iPhone doesn’t easily scratch, but how about its back? Critics say that it’s as resistant as the front, though it can still possess some scratches, primarily in the Apple’s shiny logo. This is the part that is not often protected by any case.

PCWorld’s Stress Test

The stress test performed by Eric Butterfield is considered to be one of the most comprehensive abuse tests done on the iPhone. The phone was subject to a lot of examinations such as scratch test, pressure test, and drop test. The result? iPhone is highly tolerable with pressure. Even if it finds itself being robbed by numerous other materials in you pocket or bag, it can still function normally, with no scratches and no affected application or button.

However, the most surprising revelation is that the iPhone is literally strong. Consider the drop test, which was performed in linoleum, carpet, and concrete. Except for a very minor dent, the iPhone looks brand new and, most of all, functioning.

Some Words of Advice

Now it doesn’t mean that since it passes the abuse test, you will just feel all lenient of it. Remember, these are all one-time tests. Do all of these repeatedly and you’ll see your phone “age” fast. If you want to give it maximum protection, give it a good silicone case. Avoid exposing it to heat. As an owner, you have the sole responsibility for its prolonged use.

Minah rempit step out of boyfriends’ shadows

A NEW breed of illegal racers is menacing the streets with their daredevil stunts – and they are not boys, reported Harian Metro.

These minah rempit do everything their biker boyfriends do, including racing for thrills, money and sex.

The paper interviewed two girls, who confessed they started out by being groupies and gradually learned from the mat rempit how to do wheelies and other acrobatic stunts on their machines.

A self-confessed 17-year-old minah rempit, who identified herself as Lia, said she learned the ropes from her boyfriend.

“I borrowed motorcycles from friends and three months later I could speed up to 130kph,” she said, adding that her skills were still not as good as some other girls.

Lia, who is being rehabilitated at the Darul Islah welfare home in Selangor, claimed girls who mix with street racing gangs are likely to be “spoilt” as they eventually become the “trophies” for the mat rempit who wins the race.

“I was nearly a victim after my boyfriend lost a race and I had to spend the night with the victor.

“I refused and coaxed the winner to take my money, instead,” said Lia, who added that she regretted becoming a minah rempit.

A similar tale was told by 21-year-old Jun.

She said within a few weeks of learning to ride a motorcycle, she had plucked up the courage to do wheelies on her boyfriend's Yamaha RXZ.

“It’s just to show off to the boys,” said Jun of the reason why the girls were turning to racing.

9 To 5 - 47th Funniest Film Ever?

The 1980 film '9 To 5' was placed at number 47 in cable station Bravo's 100 funniest films.

So, is that deserved?

Well, I had never actually seen the film until the other week, when it aired on TV over here and I thought I should give it a whirl.

Of course we all know the Dolly Parton theme song for the film, which was Oscar nominated and won a Grammy. Fair enough, an undeniably catchy tune. But as for the film..?

Maybe it's just the fact that I watched it for the first time in 2007, but it seems dated to me, right from the opening sequence. The clothes, the hairstyles, the office set are all archetypically 80s.

Nothing wrong with that if the comedy stands up, but in my view it doesn't. It seems laboured to me, with no laugh-out-loud moments.

The film has a vaguely amusing premise, where 3 under-recognised female office workers find their fantasies about getting rid of the boss coming real in a farcical way, but the script just doesn't contain enough laughs for me.

It feels like a tv sitcom without the canned laughter.

So do I think it's a bad film? Actually, no.

On the social commentary front it does a good job for the time, showing that yes, women can do as well as, probably better than men at running an office! Plus it has *that* song!

But is it hilarious? No, not in my view.

Ok, the Bravo list of 100 funniest movies is hardly definitive. In fact I don't think there's a film on it before 1970, but would '9 to 5' get on *any* 100 funniest movie list?

I think it is held in fond memory due to it being Parton's first film, and a mighty good job she did too, even if she was playing a good old country girl - I've nothing against type-casting!

So, to sum up, I think '9 to 5' is an ok film. I'd call it a journeyman film, worth seeing to say you have seen it, but deserving a place in the pantheon of Hollywood mirth makers...maybe not.

iPhone EU Carriers Confirmed in France, UK, and Germany

Apple Insider confirms that T-Mobile Germany and Orange of France and 02 of the UK will have exclusive rights to the iPhone. The report was based on an article in the Financial Times, so we can be pretty sure of accuracy, and if it's not true, we can at least point fingers at the limey bastards.

Apple earns 10% of all revenues made from "calls and data transfers", hinting at a data plan that is not flat. (Should we say thanks to AT&T?!). The phones, like many in Europe and like the iPhones here, won't be subsidized. Supposedly, the iPhone partnerships will be announced at IFA in Berlin the end of this month.
